Elderly Support Project

The Problem We Are Addressing

Among the Batwa communities in Kanungu district, elderly people are among the most disadvantaged and forgotten. Many are isolated, living alone without family support, while others are disabled and unable to provide for themselves. Poverty, discrimination, and physical frailty leave them at high risk of hunger, neglect, and preventable illness. They often lack even the most basic items for daily comfort and dignity.

Planning

EVC has initiated a program specifically to support these vulnerable elders. Each month, identified elderly Batwa receive a food ration to ensure basic nutrition and reduce the risk of hunger. Alongside food, we also provide comfort items such as blankets, clothing, or hygiene materials to improve their quality of life. Community members and volunteers are engaged in identifying those most in need and in delivering the support, strengthening solidarity and care for the elderly within the settlements.

Expected Results

- Improved food security and reduced hunger among isolated or disabled Batwa elders.
- Enhanced dignity and wellbeing through the provision of comfort items.
- Increased community awareness of and responsibility for the care of elderly members.
- Prevention of further marginalization of those who are most at risk.

Results Achieved

Through monthly distributions, dozens of elderly Batwa have already received essential food and comfort supplies. Community volunteers have been mobilized to ensure fair targeting and delivery. Elders report improved wellbeing, less anxiety over food, and a sense of recognition and care from the community.

Future Vision

Our aim is to expand this program to reach all elderly Batwa in need, while advocating for their inclusion in wider health and social protection schemes. Beyond assistance, we envision the active participation of Batwa elders in community life: contributing to children’s education by transmitting cultural heritage, joining programs such as animal raising, and serving as promoters of social cohesion and self-recognition as Indigenous Batwa. In this way, the elderly are not only cared for but also empowered to share their wisdom, reinforce identity, and strengthen intergenerational bonds.
